Homemade spicy peanut podi made with red chillies and garlic

🌶️ What Is Peanut Podi?

Peanut Podi (groundnut podi, verusenaga podi in Telugu or  nilakadalai paruppu podi in Tamil ) is a roasted peanut based chutney powder. It's blended with dried red chillies, garlic, salt, and other spices. It has got that crunchy, roasted vibe with a spicy punch.

Think of it like a dry chutney powder that’s ready anytime to serve.

Ingredients—Simple Stuff, Big Flavour

1 cup Peanuts (raw, with skin)

5–7 Dry Red Chillies (adjust to your spice level)

3 Garlic Cloves (with skin—adds more flavour)

Salt—as needed

Few Curry Leaves (optional but 👌)

A pinch of Hing (asafoetida—for aroma)

½ tsp oil—for roasting chillies

How to Make Peanut Podi (Step-by-Step)

1. Dry Roast the Peanuts
Heat a pan and dry roast the peanuts till golden and crunchy. Let it cool. Rub off the skins if you want—totally optional.

2. Fry the Chillies
In the same pan, add a few drops of oil and roast the red chilies till they puff and change color. Don’t burn them!

3. Blend the Magic
Add roasted peanuts, chillies, garlic, hing, salt (and curry leaves if using) into a mixer jar.
Grind coarsely or fine – depending on how you like your podi. We love it slightly coarse for that nutty crunch.

Let it cool and store in an airtight jar. Stays good for 2–3 weeks (but honestly, it’ll get over before that 😅)

How to Use It?

Mix with hot rice and ghee or sesame oil

Sprinkle over idli or dosa with a touch of ghee

Add in curd rice for a spicy surprise

Use as a side with upma, pongal or even rotis

Why Make It at Home?

Most store-bought powders are either too salty, too oily, or filled with preservatives.
With this homemade version, you're in full control.
Want it spicier? Add more chillies.
Want it garlicky? Go wild 🧄

Storage Tips:

  • Store in a dry, airtight jar

  • Don’t use wet spoons

  • You can even refrigerate for longer shelf life

Final Thoughts

This Andhra-style peanut podi is that one thing you'll keep going back to.
It’s crunchy, spicy, smoky and packed with home-style flavour.
Make a batch once — and trust me, you’ll be hooked!
